Like many other people, I can’t believe the fuss that’s blown up over ECUSA Presiding Bishop Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori’s mitre. Apparently an (unnamed) person from Lambeth Palace asked her not to wear her mitre when she presided at a service recently in Southwark Cathedral. Consequently, she carried the mitre instead. This despite the fact that other American women bishops have previously attended services in England (including Southwark Cathedral) complete with mitres on heads.
I hope, if the Church of England (against all the odds) decides to allow women bishops this July and any of them travel across the border to preside in Wales, none of us will be so discourteous as to ask them to leave their mitres behind.
